a warm rain shower saturated the night
her wet dress clung to her skin;
the scent of orchids and lilies
welcomed her as she entered the salon,
Victorian dance music filled the air
with a certain powdery lightness
that lured the sweat out of her pores;
her glacially blue eyes (half hidden
behind a mirror-glassy mask)
reflected the honey-coloured light of the
candelabrum and the eldritch grimace
that stood before her and grinned at her:
the antlers that grew from a bony skull
the tongue that lolled from the mouth
the fangs from which spittle dripped -
her heart throbbed loudly in her young bosom
the air began to glimmer and an ultraviolet
blackness covered her…
